PSTN Switch Off

The UK transition from analogue to digital landlines.

The analogue line switch-off is the telecom industry’s move away from traditional analogue landlines, such as PSTN and ISDN. These legacy networks are being replaced with modern digital voice services delivered over internet-based technology, known as VoIP.

Most users are expected to have moved away from analogue landlines by the end of January 2027. The exact timing depends on the network, likely OpenReach,  and the services in use at each site. Many of the local exchanges have stopped supporting the analogue lines already.

The analogue network has been in use for decades and has reached the end of its serviceable life. Service reliability is declining and as such will no longer be supported or repaired.

New digital networks are more robust, easier to maintain, and support clearer call quality and additional features.

The traditional cooper line will go, yes, which is why we are alerting you to the change. For a line to make calls, we advise you to contact your service provider to discuss changing it to a VoIP line.

Any Commtel system that relies on an analogue line will be affected by the switch-off. Once the analogue service is withdrawn, these systems will no longer work. These systems can be upgraded to 4G or replaced with our newer IP systems.

Not always. In some cases, where there is a reliable 4G signal in the area, an existing Commtel system can be updated to 4G using an upgrade kit.

In other situations, replacing the panel with one of our newer IP-based intercoms may be the more suitable long-term solution. The right approach depends on the site and how the system is used.

Each site is different. Factors such as available connectivity, cabling, customer expectations, and future plans all play a part. Reviewing installations early makes it easier to choose the most appropriate route without rushing decisions later.

Yes. Communications providers are responsible for contacting their customers ahead of any changes. It’s important to look out for official communications and not confuse them with general marketing messages.
